Our planned 4-day Labor Day weekend cruise was washed out by the hurricane, and the forecast for Sunday was poor, so Saturday, we went on one last sail... and were rewarded by this nice schooner coming into view. The wind was so strong he dropped his mainsail before we got close enough for these shots. Schooners were developed by Gloucester fishermen to power their vessels back to port quickly - the first home got the highest prices for its catch. The sail from Georges Bank is usually a broad reach - hence, a two-masted vessel with the uncharacteristic larger mizzen-sail. |
